Depending on your race or ethnicity, you may be more at risk of developing certain diseases. For example, the Black and Hispanic populations have high rates of diabetes, the White population has more cases of skin cancer, and the Asian population has high rates of tuberculosis.

Tracking race and ethnicity and other population characteristics allows us to:

  • Better understand the factors that influence health and disease within a community
  • Target and tailor health programs and public health messages so that are culturally specific
  • Measure the effectiveness of public health policies aimed at lessening the health burden on various populations
